Gear inspection will take place at 6:30 pm Monday, October 12, 2015 before the Troop meeting at the TVLC shed.  Scouts should arrive with their pack fully packed as though the trip leaves then.  So plan to pack  your pack by Monday afternoon, because last minute packing is a recipe for leaving something behind!

Trip Plan
This trip is intended for new scouts who have not backpacked before, or for other interested scouts who can not attend the Havasupai trip the same weekend.  This trip takes place during fall break for CFSD, TUSD, and TVUSD, and it is intended to be a short and easy paced first backpacking trip to get new scouts used to the gear and techniques of camping with only the gear you can carry on your back.

We will take the Sabino Canyon tram to the top of the tram road ($10 adults, $5 12 & under), then hike 2.5 miles to Sabino Basin, where we will camp Wednesday and Thursday nights.  Thursday will be spent day hiking to Hutch's pool, 1.6 miles upstream from camp, and exploring this part of our closest wilderness area. Although Hutch's pool is known for swimming, the water in October may preclude us from swimming. We will break camp Friday morning and make our way back to the tram road. It is still TBD if we can manage the logistics of hitching a return ride on a tram, or if we will need to hike the 4 miles down the paved road back to the Visitor center around Noon Friday.

Prerequisite: Gear Checkout at TVLC Shed 6:30 pm Monday, October 5 2015.
Troop gear is available if you do not own required equipment (tents, backpacks, cooking gear, possibly boots, etc.). We will inspect packs and provide instruction on what to bring, what to pack, and what to expect. Come fully packed as though you are ready to hike

What to Bring
Backpacking is a light weight, slimmed down version of car camping, so weight is the enemy.  Bring the essentials, but no more; you have to carry it all on your back AND leave some room for your share of food and cookware! Your personal camp gear should include:
  • A good frame backpack; if you don't own one, the troop likely has one you can borrow
  • Tent; if you don't own one, the troop has plenty
  • Sleeping bag and ground pad
  • Sturdy hiking boots, with 3 pairs of hiking socks
  • Water bottle or Camelback; the troop will provide water filtration equipment
  • Personal mess kit (plate, bowl, silverware, cup)
  • 2 days' clothing: 2 pair of underwear, plus both shorts/short sleeves and long pants/long sleeves, plus the clothes on your back Wednesday.
  • Sunhat, jacket, hat, gloves, raingear, swimsuit (be prepared, even if weather looks tame)
  • Personal first aid kit, compass, headlamp or flashlight, sunscreen, lip balm, pocketknife, matches, emergency whistle, bug protection, and toiletries, including a washcloth, small towel, toothbrush, a small roll of toilet paper and a plastic trowel, and any prescription medicine you need
  • Your Scout Book

Meals
Scouts who need to plan meals for rank advancement will have the opportunity to plan the meals. The menu selections are expected to be limited to simple, light weight selections--mostly cold foods or dehydrated foods that are easy to cook in boiling water. Due to the ongoing fire danger in the Catalinas, we do not expect to use open fire on this trip; gas cook stoves will be our source of cooking heat.

Advancement Requirements on the Agenda
On this trip, we anticipate completing part or all of the following requirements:
Tenderfoot: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
2nd Class: 1a, 1b, 2, 3a, 3b, 3f, 3g, 6, 7a, 7b, 7c
1st Class: 1, 3, 4a, 4b, 4c, 4d, 6, 7a, 7b, 8a, 8b, 8c, 8d
